Abbeyglen Castle Hotel

History

The Abbeyglen Castle was built in 1832 by John d’Arcy of Clifden Castle.

His son Mitchen sold the property to the Irish Church Mission Society in 1854. As a result of the Famine the estate hit troubled times and the property fell derelict.

In 1969, the Joyce family, then owners, sold the property to the Hughes family, who through the years have improved the castle and gardens to their present state.

Putting it on the map

The hotel is two miles from Clifden Castle and within 12 miles of Connemara National Park, the golf club and Kylemore Abbey. The nearest airport is Galway, 50 miles (80 kilometres) and a 60-minute drive away. Hiking, biking and horse riding trails abound in the surrounding area.

Getting there

Take the N18 north road towards Galway, passing through Ennis and Gort. On arrival into Galway, take the main road for Clifden N59 passing through Oughterard, Maam Cross and Recess. when you enter the town of Clifden, you will have to follow a one-way traffic system. When you come down the main street, keep towards the left and take the road going up the hill called the Sky Road, the entrance to the hotel is situated on the left side off the road.

Accommodation

This small but impressive castle has some wonderful rooms complete with four poster beds, some with fireplaces and Jacuzzis. Tastefully decorated the bedrooms are complimented by nine luxury suites. Abbeyglen Castle has 18 superior rooms.

The award winning dining room ‘Table for Two’ is well rated by guests and has won praise from Egon Ronay. The restaurant overlooks pleasant gardens and locally caught fresh salmon and fresh shellfish are specialties, while the Piano bar is the scene of many an impromptu musical evening.
